1. What is the difference between BaZi and the Chinese zodiac?

The Chinese zodiac reads one character; BaZi reads eight. Your zodiac animal is the Earthly Branch (地支) of your Year Pillar. Your BaZi chart is four stem–branch pairs, each a Heavenly Stem above an Earthly Branch.

Concretely: roughly 130 million people alive were born in 1990, the Year of the Horse, and they all share one zodiac profile. A Horse born on March 3 at 7:00 AM and a Horse born on October 18 at 11:00 PM have completely different charts — different Day Master, different hidden stems, different strength, different favorable element.

2. Is the Chinese zodiac part of BaZi?

Yes — it is one of the eight characters: specifically the branch of the year pillar. The twelve animals are fixed to the twelve branches in this order, and the mapping has been stable since the Han dynasty:

3. Why do different websites give me a different animal?

Because the zodiac changes at Lunar New Year while BaZi changes at Li Chun, and those two dates never line up. The zodiac rolls over on Chinese New Year (春节), the first day of the first lunar month, which falls somewhere between January 21 and February 20. BaZi rolls the year pillar over at Li Chun (立春), the instant the sun reaches 315° of ecliptic longitude — February 3, 4, or 5, almost every year.

When Lunar New Year falls later than February 5, there is a window of up to two weeks in which the two systems genuinely disagree — and both are correct inside their own convention. That is why the zodiac animal and the BaZi year branch can differ for the same person.

4. Worked example: born February 10, 2026

• Lunar New Year 2026 was February 17. On February 10 the lunar year was still the Wood Snake year (乙巳), which ran January 29, 2025 to February 16, 2026. A popular zodiac site therefore says Snake.
• Li Chun 2026 was February 4 at 04:02 (UTC+8). On February 10 the BaZi year pillar was already 丙午 (Bing Wu), Yang Fire Horse. A BaZi chart therefore says Horse.

Your month pillar, day pillar, and hour pillar are identical either way — only the year label differs. The fix is not to pick a side, it is to say which convention you are using. The same thing happens in Feb 4–10, 2024 (zodiac Rabbit, BaZi Wood Dragon) and Jan 29–Feb 3, 2025 (zodiac Snake, BaZi Wood Dragon).

5. Why does "Metal Horse" contradict "Fire Horse"?

Because the popular element comes from the Heavenly Stem, while the branch carries its own separate element. Every branch has an inherent, fixed element: 子 and 亥 are Water, 寅 and 卯 are Wood, 巳 and 午 are Fire, 申 and 酉 are Metal, and 丑, 辰, 未, 戌 are Earth.

• 1990 = 庚午: stem is Yang Metal, branch is inherently Yang Fire. Popular name: "Metal Horse."
• 2022 = 壬寅: stem is Yang Water, branch is inherently Yang Wood. Popular name: "Water Tiger."
• 2026 = 丙午: stem is Yang Fire, branch is Yang Fire. Both agree — which is why 2026 is described so consistently as the Fire Horse.

So the element in "Metal Horse" describes the year's stem, not the animal. That stem rotates through the five elements on a 60-year cycle, and you can derive it from the last digit of the Gregorian year: 0 or 1 → Metal, 2 or 3 → Water, 4 or 5 → Wood, 6 or 7 → Fire, 8 or 9 → Earth. The animal-plus-element combination therefore repeats only once every 60 years — 1966 and 2026 are both Fire Horses, while 1990 was a Metal Horse and 1930 was a Water Horse.

6. What can zodiac compatibility actually tell you?

The six clashes and the six combinations — and essentially nothing else. In the zodiac framework, compatibility is read from the year branches alone:

Match the system to the shape of your question.

• Use the zodiac for: which animal am I, which year is it, red envelopes, wedding and moving dates, festival decorations, Ben Ming Nian (本命年).
