What Is Kong Wang (空亡) in BaZi? How to Find Your Void Branches

English

Kong Wang (空亡) is the pair of Earthly Branches that a given 10-day cycle of the 60 JiaZi (六十甲子) leaves unpaired. In BaZi, those two branches — and only those two — are considered "void" (空) or "empty" (亡) for that specific chart. It is one of the most frequently asked-about and most frequently misread ideas in classical Chinese metaphysics, and it is not a Shen Sha in the usual auspicious/inauspicious sense: on its own it has no moral valence at all.

1. Why Do Two Branches End Up "Empty"?

Because ten Heavenly Stems cannot be evenly matched with twelve Earthly Branches. The stems (甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸) and branches (子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉戌亥) pair off in sequence, and the least common multiple of 10 and 12 is 60 — the full sexagenary cycle. Divide those 60 into six groups of ten, and each group consumes ten branches while leaving exactly two unmatched.

Those two orphaned branches are called gu (孤), "branch without a stem." Classical phrasing distinguishes 空 (position exists but has no stem) from 亡 (branch exists but nothing reaches it). So the concept is not mystical at all — it is an arithmetic artifact of the Chinese calendar, and every chart inherits it from its day pillar.

2. How Do You Find Your Kong Wang? (The Working Method)

Look at your day pillar, find which of the six 旬 (ten-day cycles) it belongs to, and that 旬's two unused branches are your Kong Wang. The day pillar is the anchor — the year, month, and hour pillars are read against it.

Worked example: a 庚午 day pillar. Locate 庚午 in the sexagenary cycle — it sits in the 甲子旬 (甲子, 乙丑, 丙寅, 丁卯, 戊辰, 己巳, 庚午, 辛未, 壬申, 癸酉). Those ten cycles use the branches 子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉, leaving 戌 and 亥 with no stem to pair with. Therefore: a 庚午 day chart has 戌亥空.

A second example, from the other end of the wheel: a 壬辰 day pillar falls in the 甲申旬 (甲申, 乙酉, 丙戌, 丁亥, 戊子, 己丑, 庚寅, 辛卯, 壬辰, 癸巳), which consumes 子丑寅卯辰巳午申酉 — so 壬辰 day has 午未空.

Then walk your other three pillars. If 戌 or 亥 appears as a branch anywhere in the year, month, or hour pillar, that branch is void.

3. The Six JiaXu Void Branches — Complete Table

A useful memory method: start from your day branch and count forward through the sexagenary cycle until the stem 癸 appears. The two branches immediately after 癸 are your Kong Wang; the branch after those is your next 旬 head.

4. Zheng Kong Wang vs. Pang Kong Wang (正空亡 / 旁空亡)

Each void pair splits into one proper void and one secondary void, decided purely by the yin/yang polarity of your day stem. Classical texts (Sanming Tonghui / 三命通會) state the rule as 五阳令用一阳,五阴令用一阴:

  • Yang day stems (甲 丙 戊 庚 壬) take the first (yang-polarity) branch as the Zheng void. A 甲子-day chart uses 戌; the 亥 is secondary.
  • Yin day stems (乙 丁 己 辛 癸) take the second (yin-polarity) branch as the Zheng void. A 乙丑-day chart uses 亥; the 戌 is secondary.

Both examples above sit in 甲子旬, where the Yang stems 甲丙戊庚壬 sit on 甲子, 丙寅, 戊辰, 庚午, 壬申 and the Yin stems 乙丁己辛癸 sit on 乙丑, 丁卯, 己巳, 辛未, 癸酉.

The traditional reading assigns different subject matter to the two: Zheng Kong Wang events tend to fall on the person themselves; Pang Kong Wang events tend to involve close relatives.

5. What Does Kong Wang Actually Do in a Chart?

It suspends a branch from taking part in its surrounding combinations, clashes, punishments, and harms — it does not delete it. This is the single most important correction to the popular idea that a void branch "isn't there."

Its hidden stems (藏干) remain, its elemental weight remains, and its Ten Gods remain. The closer analogy is a phone in airplane mode: the hardware is intact and the software still works, but it is not currently receiving signals. When the mode is switched off — in BaZi language, when the branch is filled in (ti shi 填實) or clashed into (chong shi 沖實) — it resumes operating at full strength.

Classical texts describe this element by element:

Metal voided rings out, fire voided shines bright, water voided runs clear, wood voided snaps, earth voided collapses.

Note the word 響 — ringing out. Sanming Tonghui is explicit that a voided auspicious star (祿, 馬, 財, 官) disperses that gathering force and weakens it, while a voided inauspicious star is dissolved and softened. And it warns twice against one-sided judgment: 空而無實,亡而有存,所以未可便為凶論 — void without substance,亡 yet possessing existence — therefore you may not immediately call it inauspicious. Void combined with punishment, clash, and harm can even help, because the void absorbs the pressure.

6. Which Pillar Does Your Kong Wang Fall On?

The pillar tells you which life domain the suspension is expressed in. Traditional sources attach both a life domain and an age band to each position:

| Void Position | Traditional Domain | Traditional Age Band | | --- | --- | --- | | Year pillar 年柱 | Ancestors, ancestral inheritance, early home environment | 1–16 | | Month pillar 月柱 | Parents, siblings, career environment, social circle | 17–32 | | Day pillar 日柱 | Spouse palace, marriage, daily emotional life | 33–48 | | Hour pillar 時柱 | Children, late life, legacy | 49+ |

The reading is two-directional, not fatalistic. A void year branch is often read as thin ancestral support — and in practice many such charts describe people who built themselves early and independently, because inherited resources were never really the main source. A void month branch can mean a career environment that does not strongly pull on you — protective in messy workplaces, but a genuine discount if that branch was supposed to be supplying your Yong Shen. A void day branch concerns the spouse palace; a void hour branch concerns children and later life.

Always ask the prior question: is the void branch carrying your Day Master's roots, or your Yong Shen, or an unfavourable element? If it carries your useful element, you have a discount on your support and you will want to replenish that element through luck cycles and daily practice. If it carries an unfavourable element, the void is a temporary shield.

7. When Does Kong Wang Get Filled In?

A void branch stops being void the moment a luck pillar or annual branch reaches it — and classical texts add an important caveat about ordering.

The four standard situations:

  1. Void branch absent from the natal chart. If your Kong Wang never appears in your four pillars, it stays theoretical until a 10-year Luck Pillar (大運) brings it in — and it is only genuinely filled when an annual year (流年) reaches it.
  2. Void branch present in the natal chart. A Luck Pillar branch can fill it directly, and from then on it acts on its own sitting stem.
  3. Void branch met with combination or clash by the annual branch. 合冲 both fill it. Neither combination nor clash by the year means it stays suspended.
  4. The special case: when the year pillar and day pillar swap voids. If your year branch falls in a different 旬's void than your day branch, and the two voids cross-reference each other, classical texts treat this as among the heavier configurations — 以實為空則實可映空.

And when there is no clash, no combination, and no punishment at all, that is called 真空亡 (true void) — the most settled suspension.

A caution repeated by the classical texts: if your Luck Pillar is itself void, it barely reaches your natal chart; the annual year then bypasses the luck pillar and strikes the natal chart directly. That ten-year tone often flips in ways you did not predict.

8. Four Secondary Concepts: Gu Xu, Lu Ru Kong Wang, and the Four Great Voids

Three related ideas complete the classical treatment.

Gu Xu (孤虛) — the branch that clashes a void branch. If 戌亥 are your void, then 辰巳 are your 孤虛, because 辰戌 and 巳亥 are six-position clashes. Sources describe 孤虛 falling on a pillar as a defect in that area of life.

Lu Ru Kong Wang (祿入空亡) — when the day master's own 祿 position (禄, its resting/base position) is swallowed by that chart's void branches, so 建禄 never properly forms and the Day Master loses one of its main roots.

Sanqu Ming Tonghui quotes the mnemonic from Bazi Jinshu — and then adds that some schools call this configuration 十惡大敗 (the Ten Great Adversities). Be aware this traditional table is quoted rather than derived, and schools differ on how strictly to apply it.

For the mechanically verifiable version, use the standard 祿 positions — 甲祿寅, 乙祿卯, 丙祿巳, 丁祿午, 戊祿巳, 己祿午, 庚祿申, 辛祿酉, 壬祿亥, 癸祿子 — and check which fall inside each cycle's void pair:

The Four Great Voids (四大空亡) — a Na Yin (納音) level void rather than a branch-level one. Checking all six cycles confirms it: the 甲子旬 and 甲午旬 contain no Water Na Yin, and the 甲寅旬 and 甲申旬 contain no Metal Na Yin; 甲戌旬 and 甲辰旬 contain all five elements. A chart only counts as having a Four Great Void when both the Na Yin of the year or day pillar falls in the gap and the element is genuinely absent from the chart.

Key Takeaways

  • Kong Wang is calendar arithmetic, not mysticism. Ten stems cannot pair evenly with twelve branches, so every 旬 leaves two branches unmatched.
  • The day pillar is the anchor. Find your 旬, read off its two void branches, then look for them in your other three pillars.
  • Six cycles, six void pairs:
  • Polarity splits the pair. Yang day stems take the yang branch as Zheng Kong Wang; yin day stems take the yin branch. Zheng events tend to land on you, Pang events on close relatives.
  • Void suspends, it does not delete. Hidden stems, elements, and Ten Gods stay intact. It behaves like airplane mode until a luck cycle switches it back on.
  • Direction matters more than the fact. A voided unfavourable element is a temporary shield; a voided Yong Shen is a real discount worth repairing.
  • Check the Luck Pillar before you check the year. If the luck pillar is void, the year reaches your natal chart directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Find My Kong Wang (空亡) in Two Steps?

Take your day pillar and find which of the six 旬 it belongs to. Then read the void branches off that row: Example: a 庚午 day sits in 甲子旬, so 戌亥 are void. Finally, scan your year, month, and hour branches — any of them matching those two characters is a void branch in your chart.

Is a Kong Wang Branch Really "Nothing"? Does It Disappear?

No. A void branch is suspended, not deleted. Its hidden stems (藏干), its elemental weight, and its Ten Gods all remain exactly as they were; it simply does not currently participate in the combinations, clashes, punishments, and harms around it. Think of airplane mode: the device is intact and the software still works, it just isn't receiving signals. When a luck pillar or annual branch fills it in (填實), it resumes at full strength — which is why void branches often become the most active part of a chart in the exact year they are filled.

Does Kong Wang Mean Bad Luck?

Not by itself — it depends entirely on what the void branch was carrying. A voided unfavourable element is a temporary shield, since classical sources hold that 空亡 dissolves inauspicious stars. A voided Yong Shen (用神) or Day Master root is a genuine discount on your support, and worth repairing through matching elements in your luck cycles and daily life. The classical texts explicitly warn against one-sided judgment: 空而無實,亡而有存,所以未可便為凶論 — void without substance cannot simply be called inauspicious. The pillar also narrows the meaning: year for ancestors and early life (1–16), month for parents and career (17–32), day for the spouse palace (33–48), hour for children and late life (49+).

What Is the Difference Between Zheng Kong Wang and Pang Kong Wang?

Each void pair splits by the polarity of your day stem. Yang day stems (甲 丙 戊 庚 壬) take the yang-polarity branch as Zheng Kong Wang — a 甲子 day uses 戌; yin day stems (乙 丁 己 辛 癸) take the yin-polarity branch — a 乙丑 day uses 亥. The other branch in each case is the Pang (secondary) void. Traditional sources assign the Zheng void to matters that land on the person themselves, and the Pang void to matters involving close relatives.

When Does Kong Wang Stop Being Void?

When a luck pillar or annual branch reaches it — with one important ordering caveat. If the void branch never appears in your natal chart, a 10-year Luck Pillar bringing it in still counts as void until an annual year fills it. If it is in your natal chart, a Luck Pillar can fill it directly. A year that combines or clashes the branch also fills it (合沖皆為填實). But if the year neither combines nor clashes, the branch stays suspended. And if your Luck Pillar is itself void, it barely touches your natal chart — the annual year then bypasses it and strikes the natal chart directly, which is when ten-year patterns tend to flip unexpectedly.
