What Is a Kua Number? Your Personal Feng Shui Lucky Directions

English

A Kua number (命卦, mìng guà) is a single digit from 1 to 9 — calculated from your birth year and sex — that places you in one of the eight trigrams of the I Ching and hands you four supportive compass directions and four draining ones. It is the personal key of the Eight Mansions school of Feng Shui (八宅風水, bāzhái fēngshuǐ), the oldest compass method in the tradition, and it is the first number most practitioners ask you for.

It is worth being precise about what a Kua number is not. It is not part of your BaZi chart. BaZi reads your entire birth moment — year, month, day and hour — and anchors everything on your Day Master (日主). The Kua number uses only your birth year and sex, and belongs to an entirely separate system. A person born in 1990 is a Horse in BaZi, and is a Kua 1 Kan (Water, East Group) man or a Kua 8 Gen (Earth, West Group) woman. The year pillar says Horse for both and tells you nothing about which way to face your bed.

1. How do I calculate my Kua number?

Reduce your birth year to a single digit, then apply the sex formula. The "year" here is the solar year starting at Li Chun (立春), around February 4 — not January 1, and not Lunar New Year.

Step 1 — Reduce the year to one digit (S). Add the digits of your birth year repeatedly until only one digit remains.

  • 1984 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 22 → 2 + 2 = 4
  • 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

Step 2 — Apply your formula. This version needs no century adjustment:

SexFormulaNormalization
Male11 − SIf the result is 10, write 1
Female4 + SIf the result is above 9, subtract 9

Step 3 — Handle the Kua 5. Five sits at the centre of the Lo Shu grid and belongs to no trigram, so it is "lodged" in a neighbouring one. The mainstream Eight Mansions rule is men lodge in 2 (Kun, Earth) and women lodge in 8 (Gen, Earth) — both West Group.

Worked example — a woman born July 20, 1991. S = 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2. Female: 4 + 2 = 6. Her Kua number is 6 — Qian (乾), Metal, West Group.

Worked example — a man born January 20, 1985. Li Chun 1985 fell on February 4, so his Feng Shui year is still 1984. S = 22 → 4. Male: 11 − 4 = 7. His Kua number is 7 — Dui (兌), Metal, West Group.

The version online calculators use. Most calculators work from the last two digits of your year and apply a century rule instead. The two systems are mathematically identical — they just look different:

BornMaleFemale
1901–199910 − S5 + S
2000–20999 − S6 + S

Here S is the reduced sum of the last two digits only (1984 → 8 + 4 = 12 → 3). The reason the formulas differ is arithmetic: 1900 contributes a 1 to the digit sum and 2000 contributes a 2, so the century table and the universal table compensate for exactly that difference.

2. What do the eight Kua numbers mean?

Each number maps to one trigram, one element, and one of two groups — East Group (東四命) or West Group (西四命).

KuaTrigramElementGroupNature
WaterEastDeep, adaptive, introspective
EarthWestSupportive, patient, carrying
WoodEastRestless, initiating, brave
WoodEastGentle, permeable, mediating
5—Central Earth—Lodged: men → 2, women → 8
MetalWestDecisive, authoritative, driving
MetalWestArticulate, sociable, joyful
EarthWestStill, guarded, self-contained
FireEastClear, radiant, cultured

The grouping matters because it sets your four good directions as a block: East Group (1, 3, 4, 9) draws on North, South, East and Southeast; West Group (2, 6, 7, 8) draws on West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast. The two sets are exact mirror images — the best direction of one group is the worst direction of the other.

3. What are my four lucky directions and four to avoid?

The 大遊年 (Great Yearly Journey) method assigns eight "travelling stars" to the eight directions relative to your own trigram. Your own direction is the Fu Wei (伏位); moving clockwise from it, the stars follow the fixed order used in the classical rhyme 乾六天五禍絕延生.

Your four auspicious directions (四吉):

1 KanNorthSoutheastEastSouth
2 KunSouthwestNortheastWestNorthwest
3 ZhenEastSouthNorthSoutheast
4 XunSoutheastNorthSouthEast
6 QianNorthwestWestNortheastSouthwest
7 DuiWestNorthwestSouthwestNortheast
8 GenNortheastSouthwestNorthwestWest
9 LiSouthEastSoutheastNorth

Your four challenging directions (四凶):

1 KanNorthwestNortheastWestSouthwest
2 KunSouthSoutheastEastNorth
3 ZhenNortheastNorthwestSouthwestWest
4 XunWestSouthwestNorthwestNortheast
6 QianNorthEastSoutheastSouth
7 DuiSoutheastSouthNorthEast
8 GenEastNorthSouthSoutheast
9 LiSouthwestWestNortheastNorthwest

What the eight stars actually mean:

  • Sheng Qi (生氣) — Tan Lang (貪狼), Wood. The strongest auspicious star: vitality, growth, success, new beginnings. Best direction for your main door, your desk, and your career decisions.
  • Tian Yi (天醫) — Ju Men (巨門), Earth. Health, recovery, protection from illness, and the nobleman position. The classic choice for the bedroom and the bed headboard.
  • Yan Nian (延年) — Wu Qu (武曲), Metal. Longevity, harmonious relationships, marriage. Also a strong wealth star, and traditionally the peach blossom position.
  • Fu Wei (伏位) — Fu Bi (輔弼), Wood. Steady growth and personal cultivation. It is your own direction, so it never fights you, but it is the weakest of the four.
  • Liu Sha (六煞) — Wen Qu (文曲), Water. Money loss, arguments, gossip, accidents.
  • Wu Gui (五鬼) — Lian Zhen (廉貞), Fire. Theft, fire, litigation, sudden illness.
  • Huo Hai (禍害) — Lu Cun (祿存), Earth. Disputes, lawsuits, obstacles, being deceived.
  • Jue Ming (絕命) — Po Jun (破軍), Metal. The most severe: sudden loss, health setbacks, disruption.

4. How do I use my Kua number at home?

Point your good directions at the things you use most, and put the hard ones behind you. The classical priority order is 門 (door), 主 (bed/headboard), 灶 (stove) — the Three Essentials of a dwelling.

  • Bed — headboard pointing toward Tian Yi for health, or Yan Nian for relationships. Keep a solid wall behind it.
  • Desk — sit facing Sheng Qi. If you work from home, this is the highest-leverage change in the room.
  • Front door — ideally opening toward Sheng Qi or Yan Nian.
  • Stove and bathroom — traditionally placed in a challenging direction, because those rooms already drain Qi; putting them in a good direction wastes a good sector.
  • Shared homes — each person applies their own Kua number for their own bed and desk, while shared rooms follow the directions that suit the most people.

For 2026 specifically (丙午 Fire Horse year): the Tai Sui (太歲) sits in the South, and the annual Flying Star chart places the Star 5 (Misfortune) in the South as well — a rare double affliction on that sector. If South is one of your four inauspicious directions, this is the year to keep the South sector of your home quiet, uncluttered and free of construction. If South is your Fu Wei — your own direction, as for a Kua 9 Li chart — the classical advice is the same but for the opposite reason: you are being asked to hold a sector the year has made volatile.

5. Why do two Kua calculators give me different numbers?

Almost always one of three things: the year boundary, the Kua 5 rule, or a formula error. Here is where they disagree and which to trust.

  • The year boundary. Classical Eight Mansions counts the Feng Shui year from Li Chun (立春), around February 4, because the human "air" opens in the Yin month — 天闢於子,地闢於丑,人建於寅. A January 20, 1985 birth is a 1984 Kua year; a February 10, 2026 birth is a 2026 Kua year, even though Lunar New Year 2026 did not arrive until February 17. Many modern calculators use Lunar New Year instead, which shifts everyone born in a January-to-mid-February window.
  • The Kua 5 rule. Most calculators now use men → 2, women → 8. The deeper classical Three-Period (三元) method lodges the 5 differently depending on the period your birth falls in. The Eight Mansions Mirror (八宅明鏡) gives the lower period (1984–2043) as men lodging in 9 (Li, Fire) and women in 7 (Dui, Metal) — note these land in different groups, so a person in that window can change East or West depending on the school — while the upper period (1844–1923) lodges men in 8 (Gen) and women in 2 (Kun). The mainstream 八宅 rule is the safer default.
  • The formula. Some sites use the "last two digits only" shortcut without the century correction, which breaks for anyone born in 2000 or later. Some use a 1900–1999-only formula and produce nonsense for post-2000 births.

The check that settles it: if your number comes out as 5, 0, or greater than 9, the calculator has not normalized the result. And if your Kua group contradicts your birth year — a man born in January 1942 landing in West Group when the year before and after both give East Group — check the Li Chun boundary first, because a wrong year flips the whole group. Across 1940–2030 there are 81 birth dates in the January 1 to February 3 window where the Li Chun convention and the Lunar New Year convention put a person in opposite groups, not merely a different number.

Key Takeaways

  • A Kua number is a single digit (1–9) from your birth year and sex that assigns you to one of eight trigrams, four auspicious directions and four inauspicious ones.
  • It is not BaZi. BaZi uses your full birth moment and the Day Master; the Kua number uses only birth year and sex and belongs to the Eight Mansions school of Feng Shui.
  • Count from Li Chun (立春), around February 4 — not January 1, and not Lunar New Year.
  • East Group is 1, 3, 4, 9; West Group is 2, 6, 7, 8. Their good directions are exact mirrors of each other.
  • Kua 5 has no trigram. Mainstream rule: men lodge in 2 (Kun), women in 8 (Gen).
  • The four good stars are Fu Wei, Sheng Qi, Tian Yi and Yan Nian; the four difficult ones are Liu Sha, Wu Gui, Huo Hai and Jue Ming.
  • Practical order: door, bed, stove. Point your main door and desk at Sheng Qi, your headboard at Tian Yi or Yan Nian.
  • In 2026 the South carries both the Tai Sui and Star 5 — the year's most double-afflicted sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kua number in Feng Shui?

A Kua number (命卦, also written Gua number or Ming Gua) is a single digit from 1 to 9, calculated from your birth year and sex, that assigns you to one of the eight trigrams of the I Ching. Through the Eight Mansions school of Feng Shui (八宅風水), it gives you four auspicious compass directions and four inauspicious ones. The trigram also fixes your Five Element (Water for Kan 1, Earth for Kun 2, Wood for Zhen 3 and Xun 4, Metal for Qian 6 and Dui 7, Earth for Gen 8, Fire for Li 9) and your group: East Group (1, 3, 4, 9) with North, South, East and Southeast, or West Group (2, 6, 7, 8) with West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast.

How do I calculate my Kua number?

Add the digits of your birth year repeatedly until one digit remains — call it S. Then use 11 − S for men (if the result is 10, write 1) and 4 + S for women (if the result is above 9, subtract 9). If the result is 5, there is no central trigram, so the mainstream rule lodges it as 2 (Kun) for men and 8 (Gen) for women. The equivalent century-based version — men 10 − S and women 5 + S for births in 1901–1999, men 9 − S and women 6 + S for 2000 onward — uses the reduced sum of the last two digits only. Use the solar year beginning at Li Chun (立春, around February 4) rather than January 1 or Lunar New Year. A woman born 20 July 1991 gets S = 2, then 4 + 2 = 6, so Kua 6, Qian, West Group.

Is a Kua number the same as my BaZi or my Chinese zodiac?

No — it is a separate system that shares only the birth year. BaZi builds a full chart from your year, month, day and hour of birth, anchored on your Day Master (日主); the Kua number uses only your birth year and sex. The Chinese zodiac is one animal — the Earthly Branch of your BaZi year pillar. A 1990 birth is Horse in BaZi, but is Kua 1 Kan (East Group) for a man and Kua 8 Gen (West Group) for a woman. If you want your full BaZi chart — Day Master, Ten Gods, Five Element balance and Luck Pillars — generate it at the Mingyun Hub free BaZi tool, then use your Kua number for direction and layout.

What are my four lucky directions, and what should I do with them?

Your four auspicious directions are Fu Wei (伏位), your own direction; Sheng Qi (生氣), the strongest star for growth and career; Tian Yi (天醫), for health and recovery; and Yan Nian (延年), for longevity, relationships and marriage. In practice: face your desk toward Sheng Qi, point your headboard toward Tian Yi or Yan Nian, and let your main door open toward Sheng Qi or Yan Nian. The four to avoid are Liu Sha (六煞), Wu Gui (五鬼), Huo Hai (禍害) and Jue Ming (絕命) — traditionally where you place the stove and bathroom, which already drain Qi.

接著:男命用 11 − S(結果為 10 則記作 1),女命用 4 + S(結果超過 9 就減 9)。
